Brilliant - that is probably the best way to describe the "Aalto Theater", which always tops the critics' opinion polls. When it opened in 1988, it was only said to be the “most beautiful German theatre construction" since 1945, and now it is one of the best in Germany.
This complete work of art was built according to the plans of the Finnish master architect, Alvar Aalto. The modern, curved architectural design stimulates the imagination. The main hall is uncomplicated but elegant and seats 1,125 spectators. Sky-blue and light wood encompass the opera singers whose outstanding reputation reaches beyond Germany's borders.
The Essen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Aalto Ballett Theatre are certainly equal to the vocalists; they, too, are always right at the very top of the rankings.
